I’m looking for beta readers and critique partners.
More below if interested. Updated August 30, 2021.
"Blue Beyond the Sea"
short story - 9,000 words (30 pages)
historical fiction + magic realism
THE BARON IN THE TREES +
THE INVISIBLE LIFE OF ADDIE LARUE
Though a woman of water, legendary Edigna of France hears the voice of a linden tree. She flees an arranged marriage, creating a home in the boughs of a tree. A story of love and art, of magic and the power of calling.
I’m hoping for a quick turn around (a few days or week), as there are some contests I hope to enter in the next couple weeks. If you don’t have time right now—no worries! I’ll have new work soon.
THE HISTORY OF STARLIGHT
novel - read of the first 10 pages + query letter
UPROOTED x THE BOOK OF LONGINGS
This is the story of the battle against oblivion. It begins with a girl, long ago.
Jerusalem, 978 BCE. A reckless princess and surly warrior-scribe must secure their nation's legacy in a world bursting with rebellions and betrayals.
I’d love feedback on my first ten pages and my query letter. I’m mostly curious to where you’d place it with category and genre.
Nothing you want to read but still want to connect?
In a few months, I’ll have a sloppy second (third?) draft of another novel. So if you’re not up for reading one of the above—no worries, I’ll have something new soon. Here's a link to my other projects.
Um, but what is a beta reader?
Beta reader: Do you read? Fantastic. I’d love your feedback. Essentially I’d love anyone who thinks they’d maybe pick up my work anyway. I’m curious about a general reader’s thoughts.
Critique partner: Do you write? I’d love to find a group of writers to share work with.
Me: My work is historical fiction and magic realism. I love big-picture character work and finding what doesn't work logically in the world of your story. I can be an intense line editor. And I'm merciless about cutting purposeless words, paragraphs, scenes, and characters. I think CPs should be sensitive, compassionate, and gentle -- but honest.
Looking for: I enjoy magic realism, speculative, book club, upmarket, romance, historical fiction, adventure, and fantasy. I love character-driven, imaginative worlds, and humor. And I ALWAYS want a romance. Not only romance novels but a love story threaded through--think WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING or THE NIGHT CIRCUS. I'm not a great fit for dark or a work with lots of CWs. I like deep but get haunted easily.
If you think we may be a fit, send me an email and let's chat more!
